There is a slight possibility that I will turn into one of those eccentric old ladies holed up in a house filled to the seams with trash and things that might one day become useful--though without the cats. But only because I'm deathly allergic. We do not know where I get it from, because
giosmum is a purger, as is my grandmother (said
giosdad in that special tone of voice as we were admiring Tiffany lamps/windows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Oma haette das alte Klump schon vor Jahren zum Sperrmuell gebracht [lit. Grandma would have taken that old trash to the dump years ago]").
When we moved a couple of years ago,
zortwife made me throw out the collection of Converse All Stars dating back to the 80s. Yesterday,
giosmum assisted me cleaning out my dressing table/cosmetics collection, by insisting I throw out anything older than a year, but in particular that ace cream I've never used that still had a price sticker with a price in Deutsch Marks on it!
giosdad meanwhile was sitting reading in the living room and opining, "Ich weiss nur nicht warum sie mich nicht schon vor Jahren ausgemistet hat [I can't understand why she didn't decluttered/throw me away years ago]."
And today we started on the first of my closets--anything that doesn't fit perfectly is going, as is everything I haven't worn in more than a year, but most particularly the collection of holey, washed-out concert T-shirts dating back to the 80s and early 90s (except one or two I'm keeping for sentimental reasons) *cries*
And, oh my god, it's exhausting! We worked for three hours, filled four large bags to go either to Goodwill (for the not-so-nice-stuff) or to one of my colleagues (for the nice stuff), and we only made it through about 1/3 of the closet since I actually have to, you know, try stuff on.
Despite my protests,
giosmum put the bags in the dining room. Suspect that this means that once
firejunkie gets home, he will fish all the holey, washed-out concert T-shirts dating back to the 80s and early 90s back out :p
Oh yeah, and for those keeping track at home, it's been more a week now, and
giosmum still hasn't stopped talking.
